ISSN Series: | Handbook of Clinical Neurology | Discipline: | Nervous Sys | Subject Definition: | Frontal Lobe | NLM Class: | WL 307 | LC Class: | QP382 | Abstract: | The Frontal Lobes serves to update the reader on the latest thinking on the structure and function of the human frontal lobe. The frontal lobe controls the highest cognitive and social functions of humans, is the most evolved area of the human brain, is affected in many neurological disorders, and its functions are important to many aspects of social participation. It has been argued that a better understanding of our frontal lobes will enable humans to better manage and improve their continuing evolution over the coming centuries. Sections of the volume address methodology; anatomy, physiology and pharmacology; function; development, aging and disorders; and rehabilitation. Patients with focal lesions in the frontal lobes have long been studied to reveal the organization and function of the frontal lobes. Over the last two decades, studies of patients with neurodegenerative diseases and developmental disorders have increased and led to new findings regarding the functions of the frontal lobes, and those studies are discussed in this volume. Additionally, although understanding of the frontal lobe historically relied on detailed neuroanatomical and clinical studies of damage, methods now include genetics and molecular biology; optogenetics; high-resolution structural and functional neuroimaging and electrophysiology with healthy volunteers as well as patients; advanced cognitive neuroscience methods; and new training and treatment regimes. All these new approaches are highlighted in this volume. Lastly, with new knowledge about the biology, structure and function of the frontal lobes, new treatment targets for pharmacology, non-invasive brain stimulation, and cognitive/social remediation have emerged. The last section of the volume presents these new efforts that will hopefully lead to better outcomes in patients with frontal lobe disorders. Provides an overview of the structure, function, disorder and rehabilitation of the frontal lobesAddresses a wide variety of methodology from genetics and molecular biology, to optogenetics, to hi res fMRI and beyondContents of interest to advanced students and junior researchers, as well as to clinicians getting involved in researchEdited work featuring leaders in neuroanatomical research around the globe the broadest, most expert coverage available |
