This HCN volume on Aphasia will review research regarding how language recovers from brain injury, and new interventions developed to enhance recovery including language rehabilitation, noninvasive brain stimulation, and medications. The first section of this handbook focuses on the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of language networks based on functional imaging and lesion-deficit mapping using advanced analysis approaches. Classic models of the language network based on vascular syndromes are complemented by more recent models based on cognitive and linguistic processes underlying language and functional imaging of these processes. The second section focuses on mechanisms of recovery (and decline) of language, revealed by various approaches to imaging brain function. The third section includes chapters on intervention, including recently developed behavioral therapies, brain stimulation, and medications, reviewing studies of treatment for both post-stroke aphasia and primary progressive aphasia.
