Abstract: | This book is structured in chapters that start with an understanding of the APN role and the roles of the APN nurse within their country and globally. Next role transition through a concept analysis set the foundation for exploring and developing one's professional identity. The APN roles of educator, communicator, advocate, mentor, team member, and leader are expanded to enhance role transition and professional identity formation. As the chapters build on each other, the student will gain knowledge on specific steps one can take to enhance role transition through leadership skills with an emphasis on relationship building and maintenance, communication skills, mentoring, understanding self, and developing a personal strategic plan for the foundation of professional identity formation. The transition from registered nurse to advanced practice nurse is typically a dramatic life event. Providing a platform for students to understand role transition, role ethics, and to develop the foundation of a professional identity through a publication that allows them to write thoughts and explore issues provides increased opportunity for a successful transition. So a unique offering of this book is that it provides specific steps to help a student to obtain skills to help them negotiate role transition with the development of one's professional identity. Precise steps are provided for personal values, vision, mission and goal statements; communication to enhance authority, accountability, and responsibility of all parties; working with teams to improve outcomes; and processes to understand self. This book is intended for students in APN programs, new graduates, nurses changing roles in which there is role transition confusion, and APNs seeking to understand their professional identity and /or a greater understanding of the multitude roles of the APN. |
