Abstract: This book presents the manner in which the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) should be used in the practice of psychiatry. The CRPD, adopted by the United Nations in 2006, is an international treaty which brings the rights of persons with disabilities into the ambit of international law. It specifically mentions people with mental disabilities in its first Article. There has been a great deal of debate regarding the implementation of the CRPD in the practice of psychiatry. Some practitioners in the field of mental health see the CRPD as an invaluable new trajectory and horizon for human rights protection and for the promotion of mental health. Other experts in psychiatry, while acknowledging the many merits of the human rights framework adopted by the CRPD, point to the 'ambiguities' and 'inconsistencies' in the actual text of the convention, and to the fact that the Convention is 'silent' when it comes to involuntary psychiatric treatment. This book highlights some of those issues and points towards a resolution through a critical analysis of different interpretations of the text of the Convention. The application of the principles specified in the Convention also requires an increased investment into mental health. The book's special value resides in the fact that it presents problems in the application of the Convention and ways to overcome them using case histories taken from real life from practice of psychiatry in different parts of the world.A second point of importance is that the contributors of the texts represent the different groups concerned with the application of the CRPD people with lived experience of mental health conditions, carers, legal experts, psychiatrists, administrators of mental health services and public health experts. The book is therefore one of the very few in which the opinions of the different stakeholders are systematically sought and presented. The book also includes a review of the current provisions in the national legislation of countries (varying in legal traditions and level of income) concerning the application of the CRPD. These reviews are also of interest in their own right.
