| Abstract: | Psychology of Gender is intended as a core, stand-alone textbook that reflects the combined strengths and expertise of its three authors, Jennifer Bosson, Joseph Vandello, and Camille Buckner, all of whom are social psychologists who specialize in the study of gender. In contrast to many existing texts on the Psychology of Women and Gender, this text provides full coverage of both womens and mens experiences. Psychology of Gender includes balanced and cross-cultural coverage of how both women and men are influenced and shaped by gender. In addition to including cross-cultural analyses throughout the text, the authors also consider other dimensions of diversity, particularly in terms of race and ethnicity, student versus non-student status, and socioeconomic status. The text provides an overarching context for thinking about gender and sexuality by summarizing socio-historical and cross-cultural trends in the ways that people thought and think about gender and sexual orientation. Psychology of Gender covers the most updated research findings regarding the variety of gender identities (e.g., transgender, cisgender, gender queer) and sexualities (e.g., sexual fluidity, multifactorial models of sexual orientation), as well as social and political controversies surrounding these identities and orientations. The authors approach is expansive and integrative, reflects cutting-edge gender science and best practices in teaching and learning, and offers an updated and even-handed understanding of gender and gender-relevant issues as they are experienced by women and men. |
