Abstract:
Nurses in the public health field face a daunting responsibility: monitoring and improving the well-being of entire communities. In 2001, The Henry Street Consortium was formed to better prepare nurses who were receiving bachelor's degrees to be successful in the public health field. The consortium, a public and academic collaboration in Minnesota, formulated a set of core competencies used to guide the novice public health nurse. Population-Based Public Health Nursing Clinical Manual, edited by two founding members of the consortium and an expert in the field of public health, outlines these core competencies and helps student nurses prepare for their chosen career. Part workbook, part textbook, this new publication serves as a guideline for practicing public health in the 21st century.
